The Department of Surgery's research efforts are focused on key areas of interest that promise to yield significant results in the understanding of disease and the improvement of clinical care. Major areas of research include:

  • Wound healing
  • Vascular biology and transplantation
  • Tumor biology

The department's stature and the reputation of its researchers and clinicians enable it to receive significant funding from private industry and federal sources, such as the National Institutes of Health. During fiscal year 2005-2006, principal investigators in the Department of Surgery received research funding through The Ohio State University Research Foundation totaling more than $7.3 million. Federal funding was more than $4.2 million, or 58 percent of total funding. Non-federal funding was more than $3.1 million, or 42 percent of the total.
