A two-year program accredited by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery is available to residents who have completed training and are board-eligible in general surgery.

Two positions are available each year, beginning July 1. Rotations, which are located at the Ohio State University Medical Center, the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, the Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital, and Columbus Children’s Hospital, provide extensive exposure to all facets of adult and congenital cardiothoracic surgery.

Cardiac Surgery

The cardiac surgery experience includes:

  • Cardiac transplantation
  • Coronary revascularization
  • Minimally invasive cardiac surgery, including the application of robotics to minimally invasive surgery
  • Pediatric cardiothoracic surgery
  • Valve surgery, including complex repair
  • Ventricular assist devices
  • Surgery for arrhythmia

Thoracic Surgery

The thoracic surgery experience encompasses all components of:

  • Thoracic oncology
  • Lung transplantation
  • Surgery for emphysema
  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Endoscopy

A third-year, non-accredited fellowship is offered in the areas of minimally invasive cardiac surgery, thoracic transplantation, and ventricular assist devices.

Research

A fully-equipped cardiothoracic research laboratory is available, as is access to a sterile operating room for chronic experiments. Current research interests include:

  • Autologous myoblasts and stem cells
  • Heart failure in sheep
  • Mechanisms of acute lung injury
  • Preservation of the heart and lungs
  • Transplantation
  • Ventricular assist devices
  • Atherosclerosis and inflammation
