The Medical Center cares for a variety of complex cardiothoracic cases, including coronary artery revascularizations, surgical treatment of cardiac valvular diseases, diseases of the great vessels including new endovascular stenting techniques, surgery for cardiac arrhythmias, and cardiac transplantation. Our adult cardiac surgery program at the Ross Heart Hospital is a recognized authority in heart failure surgery, including ventricular restoration procedures and mechanical circulatory support.
The thoracic surgery section offers surgical treatments for lung cancer, esophageal neoplastic and benign pathology, and lung transplantation. We are also a recognized Center of Excellence for photodynamic therapy of lung and esophageal cancers. Our Lung Volume Reduction Surgery Program at OSU Medical Center is the first health-care organization in the country to earn a two-year certification of distinction by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Lung volume reduction surgery is used to alleviate the symptoms of pulmonary emphysema and can provide an improved quality of life to many patients with the irreversible disease. Our program was mentioned in the latest U.S. News & World Report magazine.
The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery impacts positively with other disciplines, ranging from Anesthesiology to Cardiology, Vascular Surgery, Hematology, Oncology, and Pulmonary Medicine; the resulting multidisciplinary approach provides comprehensive and exemplary care to patients.
Research initiatives within the department also increase opportunities with industry to convert research discoveries into new therapeutics and technologies.
