Assistant Professor-Clinical, General Surgery
Physician, FGP-Colon and Rectal Surgery
Colon & Rectal Surgery
Lower GI endoscopy (colonosopy and therapeutic colonoscopy)
I grew up in Indiana and served as student body president in high school. I majored in Spanish poetry and linguistics at Vanderbilt while taking pre-med classes. I then attended Washington University in St. Louis for medical school and matched in general surgery at UT Southwestern in Dallas. There I developed an interest in resident and student education.
I completed my colorectal surgery fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. After mailing my CV to many programs with a cover letter in which I compared training athletes to training residents, I came to The Ohio State University College of Medicine (OSUCOM) in July, 2007. My career here is a reflection of all of this background, which is summarized below.
I teach year-round on our colorectal surgery service, teaching third and fourth year students, interns, third and fifth year residents and colorectal surgery fellows. I lecture in each of those programs as well. I have occasionally been called on to teach GI fellows and radiation oncology residents as well. For practicing surgeons I have designed and led a hands-on course in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and taught in didactic CME courses.
I have worked to increase my skill in education research, course design and leadership. I was in the inaugural class of the OSU Faculty Teaching Scholars Program, and then completed the Association for Surgical Education's Surgical Education Research Fellowship in 2012. My project involved the use of cognitive task analysis to study natural orifice surgery. I subsequently participated in the ACS Surgeons as Leaders course (2012), the ACS Surgeons as Educators course (2013), as well as Harvard Macy Institute courses in Leading Innovations (2012) and Educators in the Healthcare Professions (2014).
Since 2010, I have helped design and implement the surgical and obstetric portion of OSU’s new medical student curriculum and became Clerkship Director of the current curriculum in December, 2012. Now, I am Integration Director of the new curriculum.
One of my most rewarding teaching experiences has been in leading two Learning Communities, groups of students who meet in our home for dinner to discuss various topics related to being a physician and adult in the world. In 2011, I became Director of that entire program, organizing the 80 such groups and coordinating their activities.
With respect to research and dissemination of knowledge, I have focused on being a part of research teams and in disseminating our work on the medical student curriculum. I am a co-investigator on a multi-year R01 award in which I collect viable specimens from patients with inflammatory bowel disease for micro-dissection. I have participated in various clinical and educational projects with my colleagues. Most recently I have spoken in various venues of the results of a pilot we did for the integrated surgery, obstetrics and gynecology clerkship for third year students that is rolling out in June, 2014.
My student council experience has come full circle, as I have planned many student events (Learning Community Olympics, ice cream social, etc.) and participated in faculty affairs as President of the Faculty Council and OSU junior faculty representative to AAMC Council of Faculty and Academic Societies. I am also an elected member of the University Hospital Medical Staff Administrative Committee.
I have been honored to be elected to Courage to Teach (OSUCOM honorary group for “servant-leader” educators) and awarded resident, student and departmental teaching awards in the Department of Surgery.
In short, since joining the faculty out of fellowship in 2007, I have had the opportunity to become very involved in faculty life and representation, teaching, leading curriculum change, and collaborating on research efforts.
As Clerkship Director, I counsel third and fourth year students applying to residency in surgery.
I have also informally advised the student-led Procedural Interest Group and Surgery Interest Group.
