The first university program to receive fellowship approval by the Society of Surgical Oncology, the surgical oncology training program at The Ohio State University was established in 1977 to contribute to greater expertise in the management of oncologic disease.

Facilities

The clinical and research facilities of the Division of Surgical Oncology are located in the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, a 172-bed facility dedicated to care of the cancer patient and to cancer research. The only freestanding cancer hospital in Ohio, the facility is one of 16 charter members of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. Affiliated with the Comprehensive Cancer Center are more than 200 clinical and basic research investigators, who provide expertise in patient care and up-to-date studies in oncologic research.

To maximize patient care, specialized surgical techniques are combined with radiation and chemotherapy through clinical and basic research protocols. Ohio State's James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute and The Ohio State University are associated with the Cancer and Leukemia Group B and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, and participate in many national protocols. The Division of Surgical Oncology plays an active role in the interdisciplinary oncology unit of the Comprehensive Cancer Center, which organizes and implements local research protocols.

Curriculum

The two-year fellowship program includes 18 months of clinical work and six months of basic research work. An optional third year dedicated to research is available. We accept one new fellow per year.

Medical students and residents rotate through the surgical oncology service, where they play an active role in clinical activities, alongside the fellows.

Research

We strongly encourage fellows and residents to participate in our ongoing research projects. Active research programs include:

  • Aspects of immunology related to oncology research
  • Prevention and diagnosis of breast cancer
  • Radioguided surgery
  • Tumor immunology in the treatment of cancer
