Sponsored by the Farber Foundation, awardees are selected annually by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological surgeons, two of the largest national and international organizations that encompass scientists and clinicians who work on brain tumors.

The researcher or clinician is nominated by colleagues and selected based on exhibited outstanding dedication and advanced progress in the field of neuro-oncology.

Chiocca came to Ohio State from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in 2004 to chair the newly created department of neurological surgery, hold the Dardinger Family Endowed Chair in Oncological Neurosurgery and co-direct the Esther Dardinger Neuro-Oncology Center.

He has been a leading investigator in the use of biologic therapies and gene delivery methods to treat brain tumors and other central nervous system disorders. Chiocca also has attracted other neurosurgeons and brain tumor specialists to OSU Medical Center and the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, substantially increasing the size and expertise within the neurosciences through a number of high-profile recruits.

Chiocca will be recognized at the AANS meeting in April.
