The Division of Pediatric Surgery is based at Columbus Children’s Hospital, the fifth largest children’s hospital in the Residency in Pediatric SurgeryEstablished in 1950 by Dr. H. William Clatworthy, Jr., a world-renowned clinical pediatric surgeon and clinical educator, the residency is regarded as among the most prestigious and comprehensive pediatric surgical training programs in the United States. Graduates of the residency are recognized as the academic and clinical leaders of pediatric surgery, including such distinguished pediatric surgeons as Drs. Eric Fonkalsrud, Jay Grosfeld, James O’Neill, and Marc Rowe. The ACGME awarded the residency in pediatric surgery a special commendation for excellence in its educational programs during the 2005 RRC site visit. Goals
FacilitiesIn 2006, Children’s Hospital opened a state-of-the-art perioperative services unit with 14 technologically-integrated operating rooms. Surgical neonates are cared for in a 45-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and critically ill patients are located in the 35-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Four beds are available for infants and children who require ECMO. One floor of the hospital is designated for pediatric surgical patients and includes a burn unit. In 2006, a new 400-bed hospital will be constructed adjacent to the existing facility with innovative patient- and family-centered amenities. Educational Schedule
Program RequirementsThe resident in pediatric surgery is expected to perform 1,000 to 1,200 major operations covering the breadth and scope of neonatal and pediatric surgery. Electives are offered in pediatric urology, neonatal medicine, and other relevant pediatric specialty disciplines. At the completion of the program, the resident is eligible for the Qualifying Examination in Pediatric Surgery administered by the American Board of Surgery. Candidates are invited for interviews based on their applications and the expected completion of an accredited residency in general surgery. For more information, contact: Fellowship in Pediatric Surgical Critical CareThe Division of Pediatric Surgery offers a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship in pediatric surgical critical care. The program is based at Columbus Children’s Hospital, and also provides electives in adult surgical critical care and high-risk obstetrics at The FacilitiesThe Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 35-bed facility that houses the cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, and pediatric surgery patients, along with critically ill pediatric patients. Up to four patients can be managed concurrently on ECMO, in state-of-the-art private suites. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is contiguous with the PICU and houses the surgical neonates and infant ECMO patients. The intensive care units are staffed by faculty from the departments of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and Neonatology, along with the faculty in pediatric surgery. The faculty in these disciplines provide 24-hour in-hospital coverage and supervision of all residents and fellows. The critical care fellow participates in the educational conferences offered by the Department of Pediatric Surgery and by Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. The fellow is required to organize selected educational conferences and to provide teaching on topics in critical care to the residents in general surgery on the pediatric surgical service. The fellow is expected to participate in clinical research that leads to a presentation at a national surgical meeting and at least one peer-reviewed journal publication. One fellowship position is available each year. Applicants must have completed at least three years of clinical training in an accredited residency in general surgery.
