The principal plastic surgery training program at The Ohio State University is a five-year coordinated general surgery/plastic surgery program, which annually accepts two applicants at the PGY1 level. The program consists of three specially-structured years of general surgery and surgical specialties, linked to an independent two-year plastic surgery residency, which was recently accredited for five years. Within the three years of general surgery are four months of training on the plastic surgery service, where residents learn the fundamentals of plastic surgery, including burn surgery, hand surgery, and facial trauma surgery. After completing the prerequisite years, residents rotate at four hospitals, gaining experience in general plastic surgery, burn surgery, facial and hand trauma surgery, cleft lip and palate surgery, microsurgery, and cosmetic surgery. Graduates of the program assume positions in fellowship programs and in academic and community practice. Although all appointments at Ohio State are made for one year and must be renewed annually, satisfactory performance will ensure completion of the entire five-year curriculum and will qualify the trainee for the examinations of the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
