Biographical

My professional career at Nationwide Children’s Hospital began in 2003 when I was employed as a Surgical Hospitalist in the Division of General Pediatric Surgery at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Initially, my work focused on inpatient surgical care, acute general surgical services, and continuity of care for complex general surgical patients in follow up clinics. Over time my clinical expertise has greatly evolved into a broad pediatric surgical practice that emphasizes on the care of burn and trauma patients as well as dialysis access patients. Focusing on these specific areas has enabled me to achieve not only clinical expertise (referral from peers for most advanced treatment), but also the ability to provide students and residents with specialized teaching and training in these domains.

In my clinical practice, I focus on continuity of care for burn and trauma patients, multi-disciplinary care of renal failure patients and education of students, residents, fellows, nurse practitioners and ancillary service personnel. I have served as the Burn Director at Nationwide Children’s Hospital since 2009. In this capacity, I provide care for the majority of pediatric burn patients, and manage all aspects of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Burn Program. For many years I cared for the majority of pediatric trauma patients, assuring their continuity of care both in- and out-patient. Based on my experience and patient/staff feedback, I proposed to the faculty group the creation of a surgeon of the week model. This has been adapted and created by my partners, and has successfully improved the quality of and satisfaction with patient care. I initiated close cooperation with the Pulmonary, Dental and Toxicology Services for improved burn patient care, and close cooperation with the Nephrology and Transplant Services (for which I act as liaison with OSU) for patients with end-stage renal diseases (ERDS). In cooperation with the Nephrology Service, I participate in Quality Improvement research and treatment protocols for ERDS patients. I am intensely involved in using various techniques for dialysis access (I perform the majority of these procedures at Nationwide Children’s Hospital). I have been involved in the “Fistula first” initiative for ERDS treatment, and I am the only surgeon at Nationwide Children’s Hospital to create vascular access for selected pediatric patients.

I was appointed as Burn Director at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in 2009. In this capacity, I led the Burn Program to successful re-verification by the American Burn Association in 2012. Nationwide Children’s Hospital is one of the few pediatric burn programs at a free-standing pediatric hospital in the United States. Under my guidance, the QI process for burn patients have been re-structured, resuscitation, feeding and pain control protocols have been created or significantly revised, and the newest burn care techniques have been introduced to the practice. Cooperation with the OSU Burn Center has been enhanced, resulting in mutual educational and research projects. I initiated a Nurse Practitioner-run Burn Clinic at Nationwide Children’s Hospital which I supervise weekly. This was the first NP-run clinic in general pediatric surgery at NCH, and it has been overwhelmingly successful.

I was awarded the Physician of the Year Award in 2007, representing the first and only surgeon in >50 years of Nationwide Children’s Hospital history to receive this award. I was chosen as one of the Best Doctors in America in 2012.

Regarding my teaching activities, I have received excellent teaching evaluation from students (national and international), residents, fellows, and International visiting Stecker Scholars. I teach Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) to physicians and residents, competency skills to burn nurses, and burn care to EMS/Firefighters.
My academic and scholarly activity has focused on burn and trauma-related research and education, but I am involved in other areas of surgical research as well. I am actively involved in a research project designed to develop an advanced 3-D technique to measure and calculate the total body service area burned in thermally injured patients. I received a Boles Research Foundation Award to support this research earlier this year. During my tenure at NCH (a 1.0 clinical FTE position), I have written 3 book chapters, 9 peer-reviewed articles and 3 reviews, and have delivered 12 regional and national presentations. I have earlier experience in basic science research, having received my Ph.D. degree in the subject of inflammatory bowel disease.
