Academic Advising

I serve as a University appointed advisor for the Ohio State student’s band called Virtuoso, a band of OSU students, alumni and friends. Cultural development is a valuable component of student life. As a designated advisor, my responsibility is to make sure that these students abide my University rules and guidelines in utilizing facilities and conducting events. In addition, my responsibility is to be responsive to the needs of this group and secure necessary support from the University.

Biographical

Savita Khanna, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Ohio State University, Columbus Ohio. She received her PhD in 2000 in Physiology from University of Kuopio,Finland and completed her postdoctoral training at University of California, Berkeley and at The Ohio State University. Her research interests include the study of brain injury, neurodegeneration, nutrition and therapeutics. Her laboratory performs in vitro and in vivo studies related to mechanisms of neurodegeneration and interventional rescue. Dr. Khanna has over 95 peer-reviewed publications with an H-index of 43. She serves as the managing editor for the international peer-reviewed journal Antioxidants & Redox Signaling, which has an impact factor of 7.2, the highest ranking in the field. She has presented lectures at meetings and conferences both nationally and internationally. Dr. Khanna’s research is funded by National Institute Neurological Disorders & Stroke (NINDS), the American Heart Association (AHA), industry and the NIH-funded OSU Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) to investigate brain injury, repair, and the role of glutamate metabolism in stroke. In 2008, together with three other colleagues Dr. Khanna co-founded a University Technology Commercialization Company called NutrimiR LLC.

Graduate student: Han-A Park. As a graduate student, Han-A won the awards and honors listed below. She is first and co-author on six publications till date. Currently, she is a post-doctoral fellow at a reputed neuroscience laboratory in Yale.

These postdoctoral students have many noteworthy accomplishments. Several of them have reached faculty status and have had very successful careers as researchers to date.

Master/Graduate Advising

I have mentored Jaideep Banerjee, a PhD student with the MCDB program since 2007. I have helped him design experiments, trained him in cell biology and molecular biology techniques. We have co-authored four publications where Jaideep has received technical advice from me. I also lead the lab journal club in which we discuss current literature and scientific advancements and Jaideep takes an active part in that. Jaideep will graduate this fall.

Since 2009 I am also directly involved in the training of Amitava Das, a graduate student in our lab, enrolled in the OSUN PhD program. Apart from instructing him in technical skills which involve cell culture, RNA isolation, cDNA preparation, RTPCR, genotyping and ELISA, I have also helped him to boost his critical thinking and writing skills which has helped him win several graduate student awards including the 2014 graduate student award from the College of Medicine. Amitava also benefits from the journal club that I lead.

It has been a privilege to mentor students, and I am very proud of all of their accomplishments. It is always a pleasure to watch them grow and learn as researchers, and it is very rewarding to be able to take part in improving their skills and expanding their opportunities as scientists.

I am interested in the advancement of the fields of neural-degeneration, brain injury, and therapeutics. I also am interested in helping student researchers learn how to perform basic and advanced tasks in the lab setting, as well as write and publish papers for the advancement of their research careers.
