Working in one of the busiest transplantation centers in the nation, house officers at The Ohio State University Medical Center are exposed to a wide variety of transplantation procedures, including kidney, liver, and pancreas transplantation. Pediatric organ transplantation takes place at Columbus Children’s Hospital, and adult transplantation at University Medical Center. General surgery residents rotate through the transplantation service during their intern and PGY3 years. Competence in management of the immunosuppressed patient is the major goal of these rotations, and considerable experience in transplantation procedures as surgeon and assistant is provided. Residents also gain experience in vascular access. A two-year fellowship in solid organ transplantation is accredited by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. One position is available each year to applicants who have completed the requirements for certification by the American Board of Surgery.
