The division has broadened the scope of its research activities to include representatives from Anesthesiology, Dietary, Pain and Palliative Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. A number of collaborations were initiated during the year, including a dedicated research curriculum titled "How To Do Research" and joint clinical studies with the Department of Anesthesiology.
Faculty members in the division published over 40 scholarly articles, abstracts and book chapters in 2012. Division members had 7 podium presentations at national meetings and numerous other presentations at international and national meetings. The Division secured over $1 million in total funding and other external support during the past 4 years.
Dr. Charles Cook, associate professor of surgery, continues NIH-funded research examining cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation during critical illness and after transplantation. His laboratory recently published a notable article in the American Journal of Transplantation suggesting that cytomegalovirus reactivation can disrupt development of tolerance after heart transplantation.
